US stocks opened higher on Tuesday after a long weekend, and risk appetite was fueled by a sharp drop in coronavirus cases and assurances of continued support from the Federal Reserve.
The Dow Jones index rose 105 points or 0.3% to 31.564 points. The S&P 500 Index rose 0.2% and the NASDAQ Composite Index rose 0.3%. All three indices reached record highs in the first minutes of trading.
The New York Empire State Manufacturing Index rose more than expected to its highest level since September, another sign that the clouds over the economy are gradually clearing.
